History
The Northland Orchid Society (NOS; former Northland Orchid Club) was formed February 15, 2005 in Duluth, MN. The founding members include a few Duluth Garden Flower Society (DGFS) members and other orchid enthusiasts that responded to newspaper announcements in local papers.
The main reason we got together was a curiosity about orchids, to meet others in the area who grew them, and to learn how to improve the cultivation of our plants. Now we are moving towards promoting the exciting hobby of orchid growing. |
While over 25,000 species of orchids exist worldwide, only some are ideal for home growing without a greenhouse. Phalaenopsis and mottled leaf Paphiopedilums can be grown in home conditions such as for African violets. Others can be grown indoors with some special care. And the Duluth area is home to perennial native orchids like the Cypripedium slipper orchids.
The NOS hopes to show our members' plants at local shows, to promote orchid growing, and to share cultural information such as light, water, fertilizing, temperatures and potting media. Also we can inform about local sources of plants and supplies. |
